After looking at the submissions of counsel to both parties and the submission by INEC counsel, it was obvious that the election was characterized with a lot of irregularities. There were a lot of election malpractices by the umpire in favour of Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) which placed undue advantage on him and his party at the detriment of other contestants in the election –Justice Monica Bon Gban-Mensen
The peoples General has returned’, was how one elated supporter describe the return of Chief Great Ovedje Ogboru, the Governorship candidate of the Democratic Peoples Party (DPP), to Delta state after the court judgement annulling the 2007governorship election in the state.
Indeed for more than three hours after he arrived the Osubi Airport, Osubi, near Warri, Delta State, in a chartered aircraft, Chief Great Ogboru, could not get to Effurun, less than five minutes away, because of the mammoth crowd that came to receive him in what can best be described as a joyous hero’s welcome.
The crowd was such that security details had to fire sporadically into the air to pave a way for him to drive through to the huge crowd that lined the streets, to the scheduled venue of the advertised rally at the John F Kennedy Play Ground in Warri. Sources close to Delta Focus claim that the decision to use the John F Kennedy playground was a last ditch alternative for the Ogboru rally after authorities allegedly acting on orders from above, had refused to grant him permission to use any of the notable venues.
Even then, he was overwhelmed by a wave of supporters and well wishers from all works of life and professions and this resulted in Effurun town locked up in a traffic jam with no movement of vehicles for several hours, a situation last witnessed when the rally for President Jonathan was held in the city a couple of months ago.
The story was the same in Asaba when Chief Ogboru made a brief whistle stop to see the capital city. The entire city was buzzing with excitement and the quiet anticipation that had been in the air all day, suddenly transformed in a matter of minutes into a massive crowd of joyous well wishers and supporters such that traffic had to be diverted away from the Ogbogonogo area when he arrived and made his way to the Asagba Of Asaba’s Palace for Royal blessings. He then went to the popular Giddy’s place where he was warmly welcomed by the proprietor Mr. Gideon Nwaomu and a mammoth crowd of supporters.
For a man who had been away from the state for so long and who many Deltans had come to regard as ‘unserious’, especially following rumours of his reported ambivalence and alleged political romance with several political parties including the PDP, the crowd which lined up the streets of Warri and Asaba to welcome him was to say the least, amazing and quite instructive, which left many pundits and Delta watchers with the feeling that the forthcoming re-run election in the state may not be as easy and simple for the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as many had thought.
Great Ovedje Ogboru is definitely ready for the re-run election in Delta state and he means business.
