The Chief Judge of Delta State, Justice Marshal Umukoro, administered the oaths of office on Friday May 29, 2015 at the occasion which held at the ceremonial Cenotaph ground and witnessed a mammoth crowd of Deltans from all works of life including the immediate past Governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, his Deputy, Prof. Amos Utuama (SAN) and their spouses.
Governor Okowa, shortly after taking the oath of office, inspected a guard of honour mounted by the Nigerian Police, after which he took the salute during a parade to mark the ceremony.
In his inauguration speech, the new Delta Governor assured Deltans of an all inclusive government where there will be no discrimination, adding that there will be equity, Justice and fairness in the course of his administration.
Governor Okowa, who credited his emergence to the collective commitment of Deltans and the will of God, stated, “we regard the entire state as our constituency and we will work for the common good of all Deltans.”
He said, “We will create opportunity for our people to participate in the act of governance, I promise to govern our people with respect and fear of God, greed must give way and sacrifice must take its place,” even as he affirmed that, “we will enthrone a legacy of wealth and prosperity for our people based on our five point agenda.”
Highlighting the Five Point Agenda, which is captured under the acronym S.M.A.R.T, Governor Okowa, who is the first ever Delta Governor from Anioma extraction in Delta State, said that the Agenda is structured around, Strategic wealth creation initiatives and provision of Jobs for all; Meaningful peace building platforms aimed at political/social stability; Agricultural reforms and industrialization; relevant health and education policies; as well as, Transformed environment through massive urban renewal.
While calling for the support and cooperation of all Deltans, the Governor disclosed that a number of bills including those to restructure the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), Asaba Capital City Development Board, Technical Education and Delta State Contributory Health Bills to the Delta State House of Assembly, will be forwarded to the Delta State House of Assembly, immediately it is constituted, as his first priorities to hit the ground running once he assumes office officially.
The historic ceremony was witnessed by top politicians, members of the outgone Delta State cabinet, foreign dignitaries and captains of industries, as well as Traditional rulers and top celebrities including two of the most celebrated and decorated Nigerian footballers, Kanu Nwakwo (Papillo), who is a former African Footballer of the year and the mercurial Austin JayJay, chairman of the Delta State Football Federation, amongst others.
