NMALAGUReligious bodies in Delta state, in a meeting held on August 22, 2015 at government house Asaba, the state capital, have agreed to work in unity to ensure peace co-existence and progressive development in the state.

The meeting which was chaired by the Executive Assistant to the Governor to the Delta State on Religious Matters, Bishop Greatman O.G Nmalagu, had been convened to seek ways of fostering unity among all religious groups in the state, as well as, brief the religious leaders on plans already made for special prayer in commemoration of the 24th Anniversary Celebration of Delta State, slated for August 27, 2015.

Bishop Mmalagu Greatman, in his welcome address, reminded the various religious leaders of the Christian, Islamic and traditionalist groups, that as Delta state celebrates her 24 years of creation, the need for more and closer unity among the people was highly imperative, for it is only in a united and peaceful state, that meaningful development that will lead to prosperity for all will be attained, even as he added that the issue of unity and peace should be a prerogative of all, and the religious bodies should champion it.

According to him, “It is only when there is peace, that there will be unity and prosperity for all”.

The Delta Governor’s aide on religious matters noted that the importance of the meeting was underscored by the fact that it was the first between his office and the various religious bodies in the state, who are very central to the SMART agenda of the Okowa administration, on peace building and cooperation and their support for the Okowa administration would go a long way to reduce religious conflicts and distraction an ensure that the dividends of democracy are pursued vigourously for all Deltans.

Bishop Mmalagu then assured them that the meeting would be convened as regularly as possible and pledged the readiness of his office to partner with all religious leaders and groups on issues of mutual benefit and understanding of all.

Responding, the various religious leaders in the state in their comments, agreed with the religious aide to the Delta State government, that without unity and peace, proper development would not be attained in the state and as such there was the need to support the present government lead by Senator Ifeanyi Okowa to achieve better socio/economic development for all, even as they pledged unanimously to support the government to achieve this laudable objective.

Those present at the meeting hosted by the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Okowa on Religious Matters, were, Rev (Dr.) Gideon Oyibo, the leader of the Christian Association of Nigeria, (CAN), Alhaji Mohammed, the leader of the Muslims, Rev. (Dr.) Ben Golley, as well as the representative of the Traditionalists in the state, in the person of the King of Utuokpo kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Pastor Solomon amongst others.
