GREATMAN1Muslim leaders in Delta state, under the aegis of the League of Imams, have passed a vote of confidence on the state governor, Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa and the Executive Assistant on Religious Matters, to the governor, Bishop Greatman Nmalagu.

The Muslim leaders, who were reacting to a recent publication by some Muslims in the state, claiming that they had been ‘imprisoned’ in his office while attending a meeting convened by the Religious Aide to the Governor, described the petitioners as detractors of Islam in the state.

The Muslim leaders under the League of Imams, who spoke to Newsmen after a meeting in Asaba, said the present government of Senator Okowa has been friendly to the Muslims since inception, through the office of the Executive Assistant to the governor.

Speaking on behalf of the group, the Chairman Delta State League of Imams, Alhaji Ahmad Mustapha said the alleged harassment of the Muslim Leaders by the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Religious Matters, was false, as the meeting ended peacefully and successfully.

According to him, “We weren’t locked up in any form by anybody and nobody fainted, as we deliberated and successfully agreed on all the points tabled at the said meeting, after which we all took a group photograph with the Governor’s Aide, before we departed.”

Also speaking, the former Chairman of the Delta State Muslim Welfare Board, Alhaji Yusufu Eregbene, who was also mentioned as one of the petitioners, denounced the petition, and called it a total distraction to what the Okowa’s government had done for the Muslims since 2015.

According to Alhaji Eregbene, the meeting was called because of the names of the new Delta State Muslim Welfare Board members, who the indigenous Muslims felt they were not Deltans, but after the meeting all the grey areas were resolved.

“The meeting came out with a resolution that the board as constituted by the government should be inaugurated. Nobody fainted and nobody was detained,” he said.

They then appealed to the state government not to see the petition and allegation as coming from the entire Muslims in Delta State, but just from a group of individuals.
