In the result declared after the elections, by Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State, who was also the chairman of the panel for the primary elections, Pastor Ize-Iyamu polled 584 votes to beat his closest rival, Hon. Mathew Iduoriyekemwen who got 91 votes while Dr. Solomon Edebiri scored 38 votes.
The exercise which held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin city, Edo State, under a free and fair atmosphere and conducted by the PDP Edo State Electoral Committee members led by Ebonyi State Governor Gov Dave Umahi, as Chairman, Senator Adamu Gumba, Chief Dan Orbih, Barr Victor Kwon Senator George Sekibo, Mr Jimi Agbaje, Hajia Hadiza Mohammed as members during Edo State PDP Primaries, was witnessed by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State and other dignitaries, PDP top shots and PDP faithful from all states of the federation.
Speaking after the elections, Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State, said; “We have every course to thank God for the grace He showered on us; we were very transparent and very honest and I congratulate the winner and aspirants; I thank the INEC (Independent National Electoral Commission), the security agencies and all those who played different roles for the success of this primary elections,” the Panel Chairman said.
He also disclosed that; “The total number of accredited delegates, 713, total number of delegates 751, because, 38 delegates did not come for accreditation, there was no invalid vote.”
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors have assured Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu the party candidate of the for Edo State 2016 Gubernatorial of their support, as the party’s prepare to win in the elections. Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, PDP Edo 2016 Guber candidate.
Speaking after the keenly contested elections at the Samuel Ogbemudia’s stadium, Benin City, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State assured the people of Edo State that as members of one family, he will be involved in the PDP campaign which will usher in a progressive and development-oriented government in Edo State.
According to him, “I thank God that I witnessed this primaries today, the organizers of the primaries promised free and fair elections, I am so glad because a candidate has emerged through a very acceptable process and it will make the work easier.”
“For the government and all of us in Delta State, we promise you our support; with the one spirit I am seeing in us today, we will win the elections come September,” Governor Okowa said.
Stating that PDP had come to rescue Edo State from APC, Gov Okowa admonished Edo People not to be intimidated.
Governor of Gombe State, Dr. Ibrahim Dakwambo stated, “Let me seize this opportunity to congratulate the great people of Edo State, I have never seen an election that is so transparent and conducted as a family, there was no invalid vote and I want all of us to support the declared winner.”
Pastor Ize-Iyamu, in his victory speech, commended those who contested against him for their show of love and promised a new dawn for Edo State when he emerges as the Governor.

Hilary Obi Ibegbulem, former Commissioner in Delta State, Hon Lawrence Osiegbu and Hon Reimund Benjamin, SSA on Special Duties to Delta State Governor.
Recall that the Senator Ahmed Markafi led National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party had screened three aspirants of the party Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Chief Solomon Edebiri and Matthew Iduoriyekemwen on Wednesday, June 15, 2015 at the party’s secretariat in Benin, Edo State, ahead of the Edo gubernatorial election.
The four-man screening committee set up by the Markafi led PDP, was headed by former Minister of Education, Prof. Tunde Adediran and also had Senator Abiye Sekibo, Senator Joshua Idaini, Ndubusi Nwingwe and Faruk Yahaya Idris as members.
The Chairman of the Committee, Prof. Adeniran, had reportedly expressed confidence in the screening, after the exercise, saying it was thorough.
“We are here for the screening of governorship aspirants with a view to electing a candidate through a credible and transparent primary election that will be taking place on Monday.
“The screening exercise has been undertaken, very thorough and we are indeed very proud as a party that we have a very wonderful and patriotic Nigerians and committed party leaders from Edo State who have shown interest in vying for the candidacy of our great party.
“Three of the governorship aspirants were screened one after the other and we found them very worthy. They have met the relevant criteria and conditions stipulated in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and of course, the requirements of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“We believe that with these men of honour, we are sure that the details of the Electoral Act must be taken into consideration in the screening and by the time we present whoever emerges among them as required by the Electoral Law, it will be easy for our candidate to scale through,” Adeniran said.
Adediran further disclosed that the aspirants had agreed to work with whoever emerges as the party’s flag bearer during the September 10, 2016 governorship election.
With his victory at the Edo state PDP Primaries, Pastor Osagie Ize Iyamu will now square up with the APC governorship Candidate Dr. Godwin Obaseki, who many expect will be his fiercest rival at the Edo guber polls is slated for September 10, 2016, according to the guideline released by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on April 13, 2016.
Dr. Godwin Obaseki had earlier on Sunday, June 19, 2016, emerged the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Sept. 10 election in Edo State, scoring a total of 1,618 votes to defeat 11 other opponents.
Governor Aminu Masari of Katsina State, who led the APC’s national delegation that conducted the primary election, announced the results in Benin, the Edo state capital and described the election as credible, fair and free, even as he urged the losers and their supporters to close ranks ahead of the crucial governorship election in the state.
Other aspirants, who contested the APC guber primaries, were Deputy Governor Pius Odubu, who polled 471 votes; former minister of state for works, Chris Ogiemwonyi, 137 votes; Ken Imasuagbon, 247 votes; a former governor of the state, Osariemen Osunbor, eight votes and Prof. Ebegue Amadasu, who also polled eight votes.
Also, a retired Major General, Charles Airhiabvere, who was actually the PDP Governorship candidate against Governor Adams Ohshiomhole in the 2012 Edo guber polls, garnered 11 votes; Emmanuel Arigbe-Osula, 10 votes; Austin Emuan, seven votes; Blessing Agbomhere, fives votes, and the only female aspirant, Tina Agbarha, three votes. 41 votes were invalid.
In his victory speech, Dr. Obaseki, who is reportedly seen by many as the annointed candidate of Governor Adams Oshiomhole, said his triumph was a collective one which required cooperation of all party members to succeed.
