delpdp1Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has called on members of the Delta North chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to embrace the virtues of working together as a united body and enjoined them to continue to strengthen the process of instituting collective leadership in their activities, stressing that these were the sure ways of consolidating the party in the state.

The Delta state governor gave this charge, during the maiden stake-holders banquet and interactive meeting organized by the recently inaugurated Delta North PDP executive committee, led by its Chairman, Hon. Moses Iduh, at Trinity event centre, Agbor, in Ika Nort-East LGA of Delta state.

Addressing the impressive gathering of top elected politicians, statesmen and women, opinion leaders and key party officials from the 9 Local government areas that constitute the Delta North Senatorial zone, Governor Okowa lauded the initiative of the newly elected Delta North PDP Chairman, for organizing the banquet and interactive meeting of stakeholders, stating that such parley was very important in fostering party unity and bonding amongst members.

Okowa, who chided some members for coming late to the event and gave kudos to the elders of the party for their punctuality, hailed the party faithful for the maturity they exhibited during the state congresses, even as he harped extensively on the need for party members to eschew and discourage gossip, stressing that members should always embrace dialogue, talk to themselves regularly and avoid nursing grudges against each other, as these were the panacea for resolving contentious issues and building a formidable party in the state.

Governor Okowa said: “We must always embrace partnership and the spirit of working together. The more we are together, the better we are as a people. Our unity will be strengthened when opposition emerges during election time and so we must all work with a unity of purpose, planning, party administration and implementation of party activities.”

Speaking further, the governor charged party members to be accommodating and work towards achieving the collective dream of the party, even as he urged them to always put the will of the people first and learn to work with each other irrespective of the pain that may have been inflicted in the past.

“I am a living example of someone who has been at the receiving end of such pain, but I have put it behind me and I am trying to live peacefully with others. We gain nothing when we begin to fight ourselves. Collective leadership is very important and we must begin to put the structures in place to build collective leadership in the Senatorial zone. The party needs a college of leaders from Delta North, who must see it as their primary responsibility and resolve to harmonize, unite and reconcile all those who are aggrieved.

“I am a firm believer in Delta North but we must not be carried away by the thinking that we have strength because we now have the Governorship of the state. We have to work towards building that strength through ensuring peace in our own home and working together, because it is the fight inside that is more difficult to resolve than the one we fight with outsiders. 2019 will definitely bring up opposition, so we must keep the home in order, to be prepared to face the challenge. We have to ensure we fight the battle at home and win,” the governor noted.

Okowa also spoke on party funding in his address and while emphasizing on the present harsh economic reality, noted that the party in the zone must work out a funding process to establish a pool of funds with which to manage the party at all levels, adding that the party should devise ways to mobilize members from the communities and also get them, especially the youths, to participate in party activities, especially from positions of responsibility and authority.

The governor, who urged party leaders and political office holders to key into the empowerment programme of the state government, frowned at what he described as ‘eye service’ activities, and while noting that there was a difference between commitment and propaganda, pleaded for sustainable empowerment initiatives instead of temporary empowerment, even as he urged party members to ensure the proper screening of constituents from the local government areas, before nominating them for the next batch of the government’s job creation training programme, which is expected to commence in July.

Governor Okowa then thanked the people of Delta North for their support, even as he reminded them of the opposition that would definitely emerge in 2019, urging party leaders to initiate regular meetings of the party hierarchy at all levels, embrace and carry everybody along, be loyal and faithful to the party at all times and ensure collective leadership in order to consolidate unity and strengthen the party.

Delta North PDP Chairman, Hon. Moses Iduh, in his welcome address, hailed the impressive achievements of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa in the last one year, describing them as ‘amazing’ and while addressing the governor as ‘a miracle worker’, called on party members to continue to support the administration by contributing positively towards the actualization of the SMART Agenda in the state.

Iduh, who charged party leaders and faithful to avoid godfatherism and embrace party discipline, stated that a reconciliation and harmonization committee would soon be set up to address and resolve all grievances resulting from the last state congresses as well as other contentious issues in the zone, called on party members at all levels to see the funding of the party as a collective responsibility which must be addressed with the importance it deserves.

The Delta North PDP Chairman, acknowledged the Contributions of our Most Distinguished Senator Representing Delta North Senatorial District, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, for the one million naira monthly donation he extended to the past Administration which has also continued with the current Exco in Delta North, even as he appreciated the Deputy Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Friday Osanebi for his very robust and life impacting Empowerment programme for Ndokwa people in his Local Government Area, Ndokwa East LGA as well as his support and indeed those of other public office holders, who in one way or the other had supported the Party and urged all Leaders to ensure that Governor Okowa’s Prosperity Agenda for all Deltans is promoted extensively at the grassroots level.

delpdpIn his own comments, Senator representing Delta North Senatorial zone, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi recalled the intrigues that had attended the political battle to secure the Governorship to Delta North and uphold the equity of power sharing balance in the state, noting that Governor Okowa himself was an excellent candidate which made the case straightforward and gave Delta North the advantage in the Governorship elections.

Senator Nwaoboshi, who also took time to announce that he was instituting an endowment fund for the people of Delta North in line with his campaign promise and as part of his contributions to support the empowerment efforts of the state government, equally dismissed the fortunes of All Progressives Congress, APC both in the state and at the national level, including the national Assembly, even as he confidently proclaimed that Governor Okowa’s second term was incontestable, adding that the PDP was also on the verge of reclaiming its number one position on the national political landscape.

delpdp2Others who spoke at the epoch making interactive banquet, included House of Representatives members, Onyemaechi Mrakpor, Victor Nwokolo and Ossai Ossai, former Presidential Adviser to Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo on National Assembly Matters and frontline PDP Stateswoman, Dame Esther Uduehi, who urged the party leadership to give more empowerment to women, as well as the Deputy Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Friday Osanebi, who pledged the sum of N10million, to be disbursed to the party chairmen in the 9LGAs of the zone, as his contribution to support the empowerment programmes of Governor Okowa and the Delta state government.

The well attended Delta North PDP Stakeholders banquet and interactive meeting, was the first of its kind in the zone, since the inception of the PDP in the state.
