The Delta state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has described the postponement of the Edo state governorship election, as unfortunate and a sad development for Nigeria’s democracy, even as it has debunked allegations leveled by Edo state governor Adams Oshiomhole, of plans by Delta State Governor Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa and his Rivers state counterpart, Barr. Nyesom Ezenwon Wike, to filter 8, 000 militants into Edo state for the now postponed elections, as frivolous and the ranting of a drowning man.
These assertions were made by the Delta state PDP Publicity Secretary, Ifeanyi Michael Osuoza, while reacting to the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to postpone the earlier scheduled September 10, 2016 Edo state governorship elections, to September 28, on security grounds, as well as the false alarm raised by the Edo state governor regarding an alleged intention by Governors Okowa and Wike, to export militants from some of the S/South states and make Edo state ungovernable through violence during the election.
According to Osuoza, “The decision of INEC to postpone the Edo state governorship election on security grounds, is not only unfortunate, but indeed a sad development for our democracy, as it has not only seemingly lent credence to suspicions of the culpability of our security agencies in an obvious attempt, with the All Progressives Congress, APC, to subvert the electoral will of the people of Edo state, but has equally exposed the fears of a frightened and factionalized APC, who saw the writing on the wall and were only too aware that the die is cast and the comprehensive trouncing they were about to receive from the PDP was a monumental humiliation waiting to be accomplished. Otherwise, how do you explain the fact that the so called security threat was only discovered just a few hours to the election?” he asked.
Speaking further, the Delta PDP Scribe said that impeccable intelligence reports gathered by PDP sources in Edo state, confirm that the All Progressives Congress, APC, had quickly embraced the postponement option, in full knowledge that already trained NYSC Ad-hoc electoral officials, are expected to pass out around the 26th of September, thus providing the opportunity for the APC to substitute the out-gone ad-hoc personnel with their own stooges, across the state, with the intent to commit electoral malpractice with ballot boxes, under the cover as NYSC officials.
“We have it on good authority that the APC, mindful of the fact that the already trained NYSC ad-hoc electoral personnel would be passing out around September 26, had gone ahead to sew uniforms and provide identity cards for their stooges, with the intent to spread and rotate them within the state as impostor NYSC electoral officials, apparently in full knowledge of the fact that the electorate would be hoodwinked into believing that the NYSC had promptly replaced the out-gone ad-hoc personnel with new ones and posted them to diverse areas on seeming election duty, away from their places of primary assignment”.
Osuoza however, expressed confidence that the PDP and indeed the people of Edo state are fully on ground and are prepared to resist any attempt to subvert their mandate and while enjoining the PDP faithful to be vigilant, firm and law abiding in observing and monitoring the proper movement of all electoral materials from INEC to the various polling and collation centres, warned the APC not to ferment or perpetrate acts capable of breaching the peace, as Edo people have indicated, in the course of the electioneering campaigns, that they were ready to take their destiny in their own hands and effect the much needed change which Edo state is yearning for, in the face of the abysmal performance of the APC nationwide.
Reacting to the allegations of exporting militants into Edo state for the elections by Governor Okowa, the Delta PDP spokesman described Governor Oshiomhole’s comments as the usual flippancy now synonymous with a pathological liar, whose garrulous and unguarded rants have not only been exposed and dismissed with alarming frequency, but have ultimately painted the APC as a political party, whose credit with the Nigerian people has been purchased with a litany of mind-boggling lies.
“We all know the lying antecedents of Governor Oshiomhole, who has already been described, even by members of his own political party as a pathological liar, and also exposed by the international community on several occasions on the various lies he pedaled before the 2015 general elections, but I want to state categorically that Governor Ifeanyi Okowa is much too accomplished, matured, focused and cerebral to join issues with the Edo State comrade, on a diversionary pastime of rumours, misinformation and untruths.
“It is also imperative to inform Governor Oshiomhole that Governor Okowa has fully paid up the salaries of workers in Delta state, up to date and the retort that the state has raised money to support the Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu campaign, while salaries have not been paid, is just a cheap and petty attempt to divert attention from the plethora of problems that are already sinking the APC administration in Edo state”.
Speaking further, Mr. Osuoza said: “Delta state is a peace loving state and there is simply no iota of truth in the allegations of militants. Besides, how is it possible to have 8, 000 militants in Nigeria as a whole, just waiting to be moved around? The allegation is not only the rant of a drowning man but has also rubbished and insulted the capabilities of our military and security agencies, in the sense that if 8, 000 strangers can move into a state undetected then they have questions to answer,” he said.
While accusing Governor Oshiomhole and the APC of deliberating seeking to postpone the elections, in order to also allow the Moslem population in Edo State, who would be diverted with Sallah activities, to now fully participate at the later re-scheduled date, Osuoza reminded the APC that the new date of September 28, was also very close to the slated date for Coronation ceremonies of the Edaiken n’ Uselu as the new Oba of Benin and the people of Edo state, who are very passionate about their revered Monarch, are already unhappy with this development.
“Governor Oshiomhole, while thinking he has hurt the PDP with the postponement, has also ironically shot himself in the head, because the new date of September 28, is close to the Coronation ceremonies of the Oba of Benin and is a reflection of the disregard and lack of respect which the government has displayed with unbridled audacity for the traditional institution of the great Benin kingdom. Edo people are very passionate about their King and traditional institutions and what Governor Oshiomhole has done is a complete affront on their cultural and traditional essence.
“They are already unhappy that the new election date has interfered with their already well laid plans for this period of traditional transition and they will surely make their feelings known to Oshiomhole, come September 28, 2016. Governor Adams Oshiomhole has only succeeded in postponing the evil day for himself and the APC in Edo state, by shifting the elections”, Osuoza affirmed confidently.
